Healthcare professionals need to become aware of the impact medication disposal is having on human life, wildlife, lakes, rivers and streams throughout our nation. SMARXT DISPOSAL(TM) is a partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the American Pharmacists Association, and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. Chemical compounds derived from medication disposal are being found in larger and larger concentrations in our waterways. The impact these compounds have on both wildlife and human life are of concern and are initiating national and international research programs.
Proper disposal of unused medications contributes to protecting our fragile waterways and to safeguarding lives. The SMARXT DISPOSAL(TM) campaign recommends:
1) Do not flush unused medicine.
2) Do not pour unused medicines down a sink or drain.
3) Dispose of unused medication in household trash.
a. Pour medication into a plastic bag. Crush solids and add water.
b. Add materials (kitty litter, coffee grounds, sawdust) that mix with the medication and make it less appealing to pets or children.
c. Seal the plastic bag and put it in the trash.
d. Remove and destroy all identifying personal information from all medication containers prior to disposal.
4) Check for approved state and local programs for medication disposal.
5) Consult your pharmacist with any questions about medication disposal.
