The syllabus is an up-front tool to intentionally communicate course expectations and provide clear consequences for violating academic integrity. Faculty who do not permit the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in preparing course assignments and/or taking examinations should include an AI statement in their syllabus. An example AI syllabus statement was developed by the author and reviewed by school of nursing executive leadership and the university legal department. The statement is as follows:
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology may limit critical-thinking, problem-solving, and the development of professional skills that are required of students enrolled in undergraduate/graduate education courses. AI technology may include the use of programming engines, software, and/or assignment generating programs. Students in this course are not authorized to use any AI software to prepare and/or develop graded assignments. Faculty may screen student assignment submissions for AI detection using plagiarism detecting software. Student work that is detected to have been AI generated will be considered plagiarism and will not be tolerated. If a student is found to have used AI to prepare and/or develop a graded assignment, penalties may include, but are not limited, a score of zero on the assignment, failure of the course, suspension from the program, or expulsion from the school. If you have questions about AI websites, software, or technology, please contact the course lead faculty to discuss. See also [Insert University Policy].
