The popularity of students using open artificial intelligence (AI) platforms in higher education is rapidly increasing. Many social media platforms are highlighting the ease and usefulness of open AI in nursing education for care planning, simulation reflection responses, objective explanations, question completion, and examination study guide preparation. For example, in an open AI platform, one can type or say, "Create a care plan for a patient with pneumonia," and in less than 10 seconds, a robust care plan is generated. A survey was conducted at one community college nursing school to gather information regarding students' perceptions about using open AI. With a 95' response rate (62/65 students), most surprising was 23' of students were already actively using open AI for their nursing education, without any instructor knowledge. Furthermore, an additional 21' would start to use open AI if they knew more about the capabilities. Less than half did not know anything about open AI, whereas only 8' had negative thoughts about using open AI. Educators should consider familiarizing themselves with this technology, as many nursing students are already incorporating open AI in their courses in verbal or written form. Students need to examine whether the open AI-generated information is efficacious for a study tool, care plan constructor, etc. Educators might construct assignments and testing differently knowing that students using open AI can generate information in a matter of seconds.
