To prepare students for Next-Generation NCLEX (NGN), you can effectively bring clinical practice to the classroom by using group and individual activities and classroom response systems (CRSs) such as Pear Deck, Kahoot, or Classtime. These are interactive technology tools that transform traditional course lectures into opportunities for formative assessment and active learning. Our nursing faculty created 6-part case studies using a CRS (covering each step of the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Model [CJM]) as team-based learning activities. This resulted in mastery of these concepts and item types on course examinations. So why use a CRS? They are anonymous. This low-stakes type of evaluation allows instructors to see where the deficits are in understanding and students to receive feedback in a nonpunitive manner. Pear Deck also has different types of questions that mimic NGN items. You have the option to ask students to draw anywhere on a slide, which can be used with a prebuilt matrix/grid to highlight appropriate choices or key information, part of analyzing cues in the CJM. You can use the draggable feature to create hot spot questions. The traditional item types of multiple-choice and select all that apply will still be a large part of the test plan, so use the feature called choice or text to create these questions.
