For online courses, clear and frequent communication between the nurse educator and students is vital for student learning. The use of screencasting can be a helpful tool to communicate with students. Screencasting allows the user to record his/her screen while simultaneously voice recording. For nurse educators, screencasting provides clarity in creating classroom instruction and tutorials for students providing a smooth delivery of essential documents, including reviewing instructions, the syllabus, and course rubrics. One of the many ways screencasting can be used is by allowing nurse educators to voice record over lecture material and initiate interactive discussion posts. Once the nurse educator posts the screencast with the directions to the assignment, students can record their responses to the activity. Ideally, video responses will be kept short and to the point to keep the viewer's attention, but students are able with this free resource to record up to 15-minute responses. The use of screencast responses allows the educator to evaluate the students' ability to articulate the course assignment. The student-to-student peer responses enable auditory learners to hear their peer's voices and increase communication in the online environment. Nurse educators can then provide individualized rubric feedback to each student by screensharing their personalized completed rubric and voiceover with the nurse educator detailing areas of strengths and improvement. Using screencasting in this way as an active teaching strategy can increase communication and provide a deeper level of online interaction, enhancing student learning and developing collaborative thinking.
