To strengthen students' ability to integrate evidence-based practice with health care delivery, using the National Council for State Boards of Nursing 6-step Clinical Judgment Model (CJM), an assignment was created guiding groups of students to create a case study formatted on a PowerPoint template (Supplemental Digital Content, Template, http://links.lww.com/NE/A755). Students then present the case in the classroom. The template includes the CJM as an outline, which defines how nurses use cognitive processes to gather, hypothesize, and prioritize information; choose to take action; and evaluate outcomes.1 Student presenters research current evidence-based practice regarding an assigned exemplar, including 5 peer-reviewed journal articles, and then create a scenario where cues could be derived and further classified as relevant or irrelevant. During the presentation of the case study, students are able to analyze and organize the information and then formulate hypotheses and potential diagnoses accordingly. The next steps include generating solutions, that is, identifying expected outcomes and how they could be met. The case study continues with descriptions of action taken by caregivers, which may or may not match current standards of care. Finally, learners then evaluate the unfolding interventions and outcome of the case, as well as compare the care given in the case study with the current standards of care discovered through their research on evidence-based practice.
