As I reflect back on my first year as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal for Nurses in Professional Development (JNPD), I am so thankful for the support of the Board of Directors, Mercedes Simoncelli, my publisher, and all the staff at Wolters Kluwer Health. I am so impressed with the passion and commitment demonstrated in ensuring that JNPD maintains its level of excellence and that JNPD continues to meet the needs of our authors and our readers. I am also grateful to the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) Board and staff for their continued dedication to JNPD. Our strong partnership is key for the growth of JNPD! And last and certainly not least, I am thankful to all our authors, reviewers, and readers who have reached out to me over the last 12 months!
2020 is going to be a great year for JNPD! Our Board of Directors has made several changes to align with changes in the healthcare environment. Mary Edel Holtschneider, MEd, MPA, BSN, RN-BC, NREMT-P, CPLP, and Dr. Chan Park, the JNPD's Simulation Column editors, have renamed their column "Interprofessional Learning Environments" to better reflect the current learning environment. Be sure to read their column in this issue, "Interprofessional Learning Environments: Emerging Opportunities for Nursing Professional Development Practitioners to Impact Our Healthcare System"! Our "Ask the Expert" column will now be called "Ask the Leader" to broaden our exposure to nursing leaders from all practice areas and expertise! Our first leader is Kathy Chappell, PhD, RN, FNAP, FAAN, Senior Vice President, American Nurse Credentialing Center, who discusses "Leaders for Learning and Change." We also welcomed two new board members to JNPD: Melanie Rainford, MSN, RN-BC, our Social Media Editor, who will expand our social media presence, and Chan Park, MD, FAAEM, who will add an interprofessional lens to our vision. I am also very excited to share with you that, this year, we will be featuring several Guest Editors. In the JNPD March/April issue, Patsy Maloney, President of ANPD, will be featured as our first guest editor. Look for more guest editorials during the year!
This issue of the JNPD includes very interesting articles. The Leadership Column by Charlene Smith and Carol Johnson highlights Mary Harper, PhD, RN-BC, Director of Nursing Professional Development at ANPD, who talks about "Envisioning the Future of Nursing Professional Development." The Editor's Pick, "Imagining an Orientation Built on Trust" by Jenna Beamer, MSN, RN-BC, Rachel Kromer, MSN, RN-BC, and Alvin Jeffery, PhD, RN/APN, discusses the development and implementation of a tiered skills acquisition model, which resulted in reduced orientation time. In the CE featured article, "Developing a Hospital-Based Postpartum Depression Education Intervention for Perinatal Nurses," Nikiya Lewis, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, describes the development and implementation of an education intervention that led to nurses' increased knowledge and provision of postpartum depression patient education.
I am excited about the new year! 2020 has been proclaimed the Year of the Nurse and Midwife by the World Health Organization, and the Academy of Medicine's consensus study on the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 will be released. These initiatives will help inform nursing practice and nursing professional development practitioners are in keep positions to advance nursing practice!
I look forward to hearing about your work in this area and other innovative practices at your organizations! I hope to meet you in my travels and at the ANPD conference, April 28 to May 1, 2020, in Chicago. Look for us and join us on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn!!!
I wish you all a very happy and healthy new year!
