Online accelerated RN-to-BSN programs provide many benefits for students seeking to advance their education while juggling multiple roles and responsibilities. Although these programs allow nurses to obtain their BSN degree in a timely and an accessible manner, it is often challenging for faculty to connect individually with their students. Recognizing the need to engage students on a more personal level, Mid-Semester Check-Ups (MSCUs) are used each semester for students to meet one-to-one with the program's lead faculty. A poll is used for students to choose a date/time most convenient for them over a 1-month period. Meetings are scheduled in 15-minute increments and held in a virtual chat room or via telephone, depending on the student's preference. Opening dialogue includes an explanation that there is no set agenda, but rather the meeting is simply a chance to check on the student's progression, answer questions, and address any problems or issues that the student is having. Students welcome the opportunity to chat in this casual format and have been receptive to and appreciative of the time to connect. The MSCUs have provided valuable insight into the lives of the RN-to-BSN student and challenges that could affect the student's success. These brief meetings are beneficial to identify and address students at risk for failure and/or attrition, identify needed curricular revisions, and engage the students on a more personal level to demonstrate genuine caring and interest in them as individuals.
