A culturally diverse nursing workforce is essential to meet the health care needs of the growing diverse population. Encouraging and facilitating diversity in the nursing profession remain an ongoing problem, and nurses of color continue to be underrepresented. An atmosphere that promotes faculty-student mentorship is critical for students to feel acknowledged, confident, and a sense of belonging at their institution. Mentors act as role models, enhance leadership skills, and provide a sense of belonging. However, what happens when there is not enough representation at the institution to have adequate mentors? One strategy for mentoring diverse students includes collaborating with your location hospital affiliates to recruit nurses of color who are working in the field and are interested in mentoring a student. Once mentors are recruited, the school of nursing can offer a leadership workshop and an information session for them. At the workshop and information session, material can be provided that includes the roles and responsibilities of being a mentor. Once mentors are prepared for their role, the school can schedule a networking event for those students (mentees) seeking a mentor. After the networking event, the committee or whoever is responsible for the mentorship program can assign each mentee with a mentor. Each month the mentor is responsible for contacting the mentee to provide encouragement and role modeling. To support the mentees, a 1-hour workshop or other types of sessions can be scheduled monthly. Valuable topics range from Test Taking Strategies, Professional Etiquette, Goal Setting, to Cultural Competency. These workshops enhance critical thinking and communication skills while encouraging students who may feel a lack of confidence, giving them a sense of belonging. In our school of nursing, mentees have reported feeling motivated, encouraged, and determined to succeed in the nursing program through the support of their mentors.
