In an effort to increase awareness of patient safety concepts, a semiannual patient safety fair was developed and implemented. The fair provides nursing students with the opportunity to rotate through 3 to 5 simulations or online interactive game-based activities developed through faculty-student collaborations. Examples of activities include the Look Alike Sound Alike (LASA) Medications, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and Biohazard Games, and the Name That Tune (NTT), Intravenous Infiltration Station, and Room of Errors simulations. The LASA game challenges players to check their knowledge about medications and medication administration safety. The PPE game presents scenarios in a digital game format, providing opportunities to test and build knowledge of PPE requirements given specific diseases or conditions. In the Biohazard Game, also scenario based, students learn about the proper receptacles for biohazardous and nonbiohazardous waste encountered in health care settings. The NTT simulation presents several clinical alarm sounds for participants to identify in an effort to increase alarm fatigue awareness. The ISS simulation uses moulaged partial task trainers depicting venous phlebitis, intravenous infiltration, and extravasation to prompt recognition and knowledge of prevention strategies and assessment findings. A short debriefing follows each activity. Evaluation data indicated that simulation-based activities were preferred by students, but that the fair on the whole was an engaging method to learn about patient safety.
