The Amazing Race game was adapted to help nursing students understand the treatment and potential issues for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Students viewed assigned material about COPD prior to coming to class. A case study for a patient with COPD was transformed into The Amazing Race as soon as students entered the classroom. Students received information about a patient who was recently discharged home on new medications after a COPD exacerbation. They were given information about the exacerbation, previous disease management, inpatient treatment course, and discharge instructions. Pertinent information related to the patient's socioeconomic and cultural factors was included. Students moved around the room to 6 different stations and had to answer questions about oxygen use, patient teaching related to inhaler use, teaching related to titrated steroid dosing, reasons to contact the health care provider, and expected assessment findings and had to demonstrate the correct technique for using an inhaler. Students worked in small groups of 2 to 3 and could refer to their assigned readings to answer the questions. As students progressed through each station, they checked to determine if they had the correct answers before moving to the next station. The first team to complete all 6 stations was crowned The Amazing Race winners. All groups were required to complete all stations.
