As the professional organization for nurses who practice Nursing Professional Development (NPD) as their specialty, the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) strives to meet the needs and address issues of concern to its members. To be effective, the organization requires dynamic leadership. That leadership is provided by a 100% volunteer board and is supported by a dedicated team from our association management firm. This update will introduce the current ANPD Board of Directors and will recognize the 2014 ANPD award recipients.
President Joan Warren, PhD, RN-BC, NEA-BC, has been an active ANPD (formerly NNSDO) member for two decades. Currently, she serves as the Director of Nursing Research and Magnet at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Warren has been an ANPD convention podium presenter and has contributed as a chapter author for the current and past editions of the Core Curriculum. Previous experience on the Board of Directors and past involvement on the Research Committee, initially as a member and later as chair, have prepared her to lead ANPD into the future. Promoting the advancement of nurses through academic preparation or through certification or professional development pathways is a passion for Dr. Warren. To position ANPD for the future, Dr. Warren will focus on making organization membership an invaluable resource for NPD Specialists. This will be accomplished by way of the programs and products that the organization offers as well as by building collaborative partnerships with other professional organizations with which ANPD shares interests.
ANPD Treasurer Ann Colvin, MSN, RN-BC, is responsible to oversee ANPD finances. She works with our staff and the Board of Directors to ensure that the organization remains financially solvent. Ann currently serves as an Advanced Nursing Coordinator at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, AL. Ann has been actively involved in NPD for 30 years and is particularly interested in strategies to promote professional growth, career development, and advancement. She hopes to see ANPD remain fearless in the pursuit of being the national and international thought leader for NPD.
Director Nicole Gooding, MSHS, BN, RN, CHPN, currently serves as Program Manager with the NM Academy of Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, IL. In that role, she leads initiatives related to employee engagement and intraprofessional leadership development for the health system. Nicole has been active in ANPD for years on both the local and national levels. She has held every available board position at her local affiliate in Chicago. Before being elected to her role on the ANPD Board of Directors, she served as a local representative for the convention planning committee when a past convention was held in Chicago. Subsequently, she took on an increasingly active role in convention planning, eventually serving as the chair of the planning committee for the 2013 Dallas convention. One of Nicole's passions for our organization is promoting networking for members. She believes networking expands professional connections and facilitates access to each other as resources, thereby positively impacting the experience, health, and well-being of patients and communities.
Director Sara Levin, MSN, RN-BC, is the current Manager of Nursing Professional Development and Research at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Chicago, IL, and is entering into her second term on the Board of Directors. Sara is a past chair of a convention planning committee and is the current liaison to the ANPD Research Committee. She has over 14 years of experience in NPD. Sara has special interest in preceptorships and also the use of e-learning and technology for NPD and Nursing Research. One of her priorities for our organization is for ANPD to be broadly recognized as a leader in NPD.
Director Nancy McManus, MEd, BSN, RN-BC, CGRS, serves as an NPD Educator at Summa Health System in Akron, OH. Nancy has been an organization member since she first became involved in NPD over 25 years ago. Before joining the Board, Nancy served on multiple convention planning committees, and also as a member of the Recognition Committee. In addition, she has authored chapters in several editions of the Core Curriculum for Staff Development/NPD. Nancy's areas of expertise and passion include preceptor development and AHA training, specifically, training technology and learning methods in relation to performance outcomes measurement in emergency situations. Nancy would love to see ANPD reach more nurse educators in all setting as a way of growing membership.
Linda Misko, MSN, RN-BC, new to the Board of Directors this year, has been an active, contributing member to ANPD for over 12 years. She is the current Education Manager at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach, FL. Linda has been actively involved on convention planning committees, eventually serving as the chair of the 2014 convention committee. She has also been a chapter author for two past editions of the Core Curriculum for Nursing Professional Development. Effective branding of ANPD through products and services is a priority for Linda. She will bring what she has learned working with groups at the local and regional level and apply it at the national level.
Director Chris Wilson, MSN, RN-BC, is currently Interim Director for Nursing Education and Professional Development at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Chris has been active in ANPD at the local and national levels, serving a number of years as the president of her local affiliate. Chris was a member of the workgroup that revised the ANA/NNSDO Scope and Standards of Practice in 2010 and contributed as a chapter author for the most recent edition of the NPD Core Curriculum. Years of experience at the local level has reinforced Chris' commitment to the national organization and its role in the growth of the NPD specialty and the support of members at the frontlines of practice.
Commitment and passion for advancing the specialty of NPD and our organization is a prevailing theme for the leaders of ANPD. A successful track record in their individual roles, as well as a strong history of working with groups, is an indicator of the willingness and ability of the board members to contribute to the future direction of ANPD.
2014 ANPD AWARD RECIPIENTS
Each year, ANPD members are recognized by their peers for their exemplary practice. This year's award recipients were announced in July at the ANPD Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida.
The Excellence in Professional Development: Educator/Facilitator Practice Award recognizes an individual who facilitates the adult learning process and actively involves the learner, assists in the selection of teaching methods, evaluates outcomes, and/or acquires resources needed for quality program design and delivery. This year's recipient is Elaine Riegel, MSN, RN-BC.
This year's Excellence in Professional Development: Educator/Academic Liaison Practice Award was given to Melanie Shatzer, DNP, RN, NEA-BC. This award recognizes an individual who manages academic relations, serves as a preceptor, collaborates with academia to advance curricula, and/or provides supportive educational resources or opportunities.
The Excellence in Professional Development: Educational Technology Award recognizes an individual whose creative use of technology increases learners' accessibility to learning programs and modules, promotes efficient use of resources, and supports evidence-based nursing practice. This year's recipient is Jobeth Pilcher, EdD, RN-BC.
The Excellence in Professional Development: Leader/Communicator Practice Award recognizes an individual who provides support and direction to carry out organizational goals, promotes NPD as a practice specialty, demonstrates leadership, and integrates ethical principles in all aspects of practice. This year's recipient is Debbie Buchwach, MSN, RN-BC.
Mary Jo Scribner-Howard, MSN, RN-BC, is this year's recipient of the Excellence in Professional Development: Collaborator/Advisor/Mentor Practice Award. This award recognizes an individual who supports lifelong learning in collaboration with other organizations and institutions by advising or mentoring nurses as they execute a professional development plan and models professionalism and integrity.
The Excellence in Professional Development Change Agent/Team Member Practice Award recognizes an individual who incorporates change into learning activities, collaborates with intraprofessional and interprofessional groups, facilitates team building, and problem solves when identified changes are needed. This year, that award goes to Sue Schuelke, MSN, RN-BC.
This year's Excellence in Professional Development Researcher/Consultant Practice Award goes to Sandra Sabbatini, MSN, RN, CEN. This award recognizes an individual who participates and incorporates research and/or evidence-based practices in many roles including advisor, investigator, collaborator, translator, integrator, or evaluator. The recipient includes research and evidence-based practice into educational activities.
The Belinda E. Puetz Award is the highest award bestowed by ANPD in honor of our association's founder. This award recognizes overall pursuit of excellence in NPD. This excellence is shown through the recipient's creativity, productivity, exemplary leadership qualities, and efficiency. The individual must take creative or innovative approaches to professional development or continuing education, lead professional development programs that impact patient care, use cost/benefit principles to enhance productivity, and assist ANPD in meeting its goals. Francine Kingston, DrPH, MSN, RN-BC, was honored with this year's Belinda E. Puetz Award.

We are indebted to all of them for their contributions to their constituents and to the profession of nursing and for their commitment to the specialty practice of NPD. ANPD is a stronger organization because of them.
