I too am a diploma grad. I retired after 40 years of nursing patients at work and also at home. I really was forced out because of poor health; I took care of everyone but myself. My own fault. Younger nurses take heed. I really enjoyed nursing and I had planned to work until I was 70 but that did not work out. My husband takes care of me now.

I thought about giving up nursing to do something else at least for a little while, but after 34 years I don't know how to be anything else! I love being a nurse, I guess it is the job I am in that I don't like. I will always be a nurse.

August 11, 2011: Nursing has been great to me. It is a wonderful profession and offers so many opportunities to young men and woman. I am lucky enough to be retired after 30 years in many areas of the profession. BUT I maintain an active license and must agree that I am always a nurse. I recently moved from CA to a very small MO town. I went to work at Walmart. I did not fit in! Now that has never happened! I spoke with my Department Manager, who was giving me excellent performance reviews on my work. She told me that I the reason I felt that I didn't fit in was my work ethic. Then I realized that my work ethic would always be that of a nurse whether at the bedside or behind the cash register!!

Having been a registered nurse since 1974, I think I will always consider myself such. I cannot conceive any circumstance that would cause me to say I "used to be" a registered nurse. I am one of the OLD diploma grads that hung in there and I'm proud as an RN AND a diploma grad.
