Abstract

We have developed a new Web presence for Nutrition Today that allows you as a subscriber to enhance your reading experience in many ways. Our Nutrition Today Web site, which is free to all subscribers, provides you with enhanced search capabilities and features. These include the ability to have full-text online access to articles published as far back as our first issue in 1966. The Web features supplement the print journal and give you an up-to-date interactive experience. This article shows you how to make the most out of the Web site's new features and improved functionality.

A New Free Feature for Subscribers: Nutrition Today Online

Before the use of computerized page layouts in the 1980s, the number of pages as well as the figures and tables in a journal depended on typesetting and printing costs.1 Digital layout and printing and the reach of the Web have removed many of these barriers. Now, Nutrition Today can give you a more detailed and comprehensive discussion of journal content by providing additional related material on its new and greatly improved Web site. The new site is at http://journals.lww.com/nutritiontodayonline/pages/default.aspx.2

All you need to do to access these new features, if you are a subscriber, is to create a Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) account by clicking on the "Register" link at the top of the home page (Figure 1). Follow the prompts to enter a username containing 6 or more characters and no spaces. The symbols "@" and "&" are not acceptable; however, the underscore character (_) and period (.) may be used. Create a case-sensitive password that is different than your username using 8 or more characters with at least 1 number and no spaces. You will then be prompted to confirm your password and to enter your e-mail address. Check off the box in the registration field if you would like the site to remember your username or e-mail address for future visits. Jot down this information and keep it near your computer or add to your usernames/passwords file. Should you misplace this information, click on the "Forgot Password" link and follow the prompt to enter and submit the e-mail address that you used to register. An e-mail with instructions to reset your password will be sent to that address.

Once you have registered, the "Buy" icon that appears after each article citation disappears, allowing for unrestricted access to the Nutrition Today collection. When you log into the account, your name as the subscriber is displayed in the upper right corner of the home page. Activate your online subscription, by clicking on the "Activate Subscription" link that appears under your log-in name. You are then prompted to activate your subscription by entering a subscriber ID-a series of numbers and letters found above the name on the subscription mailing label from the print copy (Figure 2). This number will activate other LWW subscriptions associated with the subscriber ID. Next, click on the

When visiting Nutrition Today online, note that sessions time out after 30 minutes; therefore, you will need to log in again when your session expires. Select the "My Account" link anytime to edit your username and password along with any contact and professional information. You will find information about your subscription status and a list of favorites including saved searches and/or articles.

Nutrition Today online also allows subscribers to link to the current issue and to subscribe to or manage eTocs.4 The "Previous Issues" button allows one to track down earlier issues all the way back to 1966 along with images of journal covers since 2006. Subscribers can also access the "Collections" pages, which lead to articles on topics such as clinical nutrition, nutrition and physical activity, and nutrition on the Web.5 Online continuing education opportunities are available for health professionals via the NursingCenter.com CEConnection Web site: http://www.nursingcenter.com/prodev/ce_list.asp?flag=jnl&id=260871.6 Currently, more than 3 dozen Nutrition Today articles offer continuing education credits for those who complete a test after reading a Nutrition Today article.

The home page has sections that feature several recently published articles, conference announcements, and proceedings. It also has "Editor's Picks" selected by Nutrition Today's editor. Subscribers can view abstracts by clicking on the "Show Abstract" link and can download articles by selecting the

PDF icon. View articles in HTML format for immediate access to Web sites referenced within document and online references. To tag an article as a "Favorite," select the "My Favorites" button.7

Click on the "Image Tools" link below a figure to access a scroll bar where you can choose to view the image in a slide-show format or in full size. From here, you can also open a gallery of images within an article, save image(s) to your favorites folder, e-mail images to a colleague, or export into PowerPoint. Export a citation to EndNote, Procite, or Reference Manager by clicking on the "Export to Citation Manager Link." Check out the "Related Links" section at the right side of the page while viewing an article to link to other Nutrition Today articles published by the author or to link to articles by that author that are indexed in Google Scholar and PubMed.

Connect to Nutrition Today's most popular articles from a link located at the right side of the home page. Subscribe to an RSS Web feed for the latest updates from Nutrition Today. Explore the Nutrition Today resources, which we have carefully compiled for Nutrition Today readers. The latest information and reports from government and professional organizations on current or controversial issues is now at your fingertips.

Enhanced Search Capabilities

To search Nutrition Today online, start at the search box found at the top left of the page-below the Nutrition Today banner. The general search feature allows searching all or just the current issue by keyword or author. The results format displays the word(s) searched along with the number of results. A drop-down box allows one to sort according to relevance, publication date, and author or article title. Results can be filtered by format-article, images, tables, figures, and media type, that is, podcasts, videos, and blogs-and/or limited to articles approved for continuing education credits. You can also limit to articles that contain supplemental digital content-files that appear within the article that can be viewed as a slide show. The embedded link follows the article through the publication process, where it is permanently available to those accessing the article online and via databases.

To save a search, simply click on the "Save Search" button. Saved searches can be retrieved by clicking on the "Saved Searches" link at the upper right portion of the page. Each search result is displayed by title, author, and citation along with a brief description of the article. However, results can be displayed by title alone by clicking on the "Hide Details" link at the center top of the results. Each article contains a link to view the abstract or download the PDF. To add an article to "My Favorites," click on the "My Favorites" icon and follow the prompts to add and name the document. The system then directs users to a "My Favorites" page that includes both saved searches and articles. The "My Favorites" page allows you to customize personal collections that can be e-mailed, exported into a bibliographic manager, or copied or moved to another favorite or removed from "My Favorites." To edit a reference in a favorites folder, click on the "Edit" link.

The "Advanced Search" feature allows you to limit by content type or to search within titles, abstracts, full text, or author. Searches can be limited by date (month and year), current issue, and citation, that is, volume, issue, and page ranges.8

Accessing Current and Past Issues

The "Current Issue" link allows subscribers to link to an online table of contents, subscribe to and manage eTocs from more than 270 LWW journals, and download the table of contents and abstracts to a PDA.9,10 Click on the "View Contributor Index" link to view articles by author name sorted in ascending or descending order.11

On the Horizon

The Web has an expanding role in the peer review process, journal production, and publication among health and medical publishers. Publish Ahead of Print, the electronic publication of accepted manuscripts prior to print publication, is now available to Nutrition Today. This feature announces cutting-edge research results quickly in an expedient manner. Publish Ahead of Print articles include a disclaimer that the article is still in production and may contain errors. Manuscript changes made prior to print publication are reflected in the final electronic version of the issue.

Other Features

The "Author" link-for Nutrition Today readers who want to submit an article as a contributor-provides instructions and guidelines for manuscript preparation and submission.12 Follow the "Journal Info" tab for information about Nutrition Today's editorial board, subscription services, advertising, and reprints and a pay-for-view service that allows nonsubscribers to access and download articles for 24 hours after purchase. Use Wolters Kluwer's Rightslink service or the online permission request form at http://www.lww.com/resources/permissions/permisform-journals.html to request rights and permissions.13 The "Job Opportunity" link leads to http://HealthJobsPlus.com (http://www.healthjobsplus.com), a network of clinical career Web sites provided by LWW.14

Nutrition Today subscribers can log in for pay-for-view access to other online journals published by LWW, including Topics in Clinical Nutrition and Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care. These are available at a central location: http://journals.lww.com/pages/default.aspx.15 View titles alphabetically or sort by specialty.
