a. emtricitabine 200 mg; tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg
Used to treat HIV infection in adults, this tablet combines two nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It should be used only in a regimen with other antiretroviral agents, such as protease inhibitors or nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors.
b. pioglitazone 15 mg; metformin 500 mg, 850 mg
This product, which combines two oral antidiabetic drugs, is used with diet and exercise to manage type 2 diabetes. It shouldn't be used in a patient with renal dysfunction because metformin increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
c. diphtheria and tetanus toxoids; acellular pertussis adsorbed; inactivated poliovirus vaccine
This combination vaccine approved for children ages 4 to 6 is the first to protect against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, and poliomyelitis in one injection. Tell parents or guardians that the most common adverse reactions include drowsiness; fever; injection-site pain, swelling, and redness; and loss of appetite.
d. amlodipine 5 mg, 10 mg; valsartan 160 mg, 320 mg
Used to treat hypertension, this drug combines the calcium channel blocker amlodipine with the angiotensin receptor blocker valsartan. The combination may lower the incidence of adverse reactions because the dose for both drugs is lower when they're given together rather than separately.
