Derma Sciences, Inc, Princeton, New Jersey, has released an independent laboratory report indicating that the company's BIOGUARD barrier gauze dressings exhibit high antiviral efficacy against the H1N1 virus. This new information increases the applicability of the dressings, which have already been shown to have high efficacy against virulent bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
BCS Laboratories Inc, of Gainesville, Florida, exposed 2 varieties of BIOGUARD dressings to quantities of the influenza A (H1N1; ATCC VR-1469) virus for a period of 24 hours. At the end of this interval, quantities of the virus were reported to be reduced in both dressing types by an average percentage of 99.93%.
In other news, Derma Sciences announced that it has completed a comprehensive Heads of Agreement with Comvita New Zealand Ltd, Paengaroa, New Zealand, covering the worldwide licensing rights for MEDIHONEY professional wound care and skin care products.
The agreement effectively triples the potential market for the MEDIHONEY products. The company reported that it currently has North and South America rights only, representing about one-third of the total market, and the agreement would give Derma Sciences rights to the remaining 67%. Comvita controls approximately 75% of worldwide Leptospermum (Manuka) honey production and is the owner of key intellectual property and patents concerning the use of honey in medical dressings.
