As of 2005 baby boomers ages 45 to 64 reported as many disabilities as people over age 65, according to the May 1 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The leading disabilities are arthritis, back problems, and heart trouble. By 2050 the number of adults over age 65 is expected to double; the prevalence of disabilities will increase, creating unprecedented health care demands. To counteract the rise in disabilities, clinicians should promote physical activity, weight loss, and smoking cessation.
