Irene M. Jankowski, APRN, BC, MSN, CWOCN, of Beth Israel Medical Center, New York, New York, has been named the first Nurse Safety Scholar-in-Residence, a role launched this year by Joint Commission Resources (JCR), Oak Brook, Illinois, and Hill-Rom, Batesville, Indiana. JCR is a not-for-profit affiliate of The Joint Commission, and Hill-Rom is a global medical technology company. Recognizing the important role that nurses play in translating evidence-based findings into excellent care at the patient's bedside, the Nurse Safety Scholar-in-Residence program focuses initially on developing tools and best practices to maintain skin integrity and to prevent pressure ulcers. Ms Jankowski has published and presented widely on interventions to prevent pressure ulcers.

Molnlycke Health Care US, LLC, Norcross, Georgia, has received Food and Drug Administration clearance to support 2 new claims for Melgisorb Ag. The antimicrobial alginate dressing has now been proven to offer sustained release of silver for up to 14 days and is now indicated for use on partial-thickness burns, reports the manufacturer. This indication is in addition to the management of moderately to heavily exuding partial- to full-thickness wounds, such as surgical wounds, trauma injuries, leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic/neuropathic ulcers, and graft/donor sites.

 

In other news, Molnlycke Health Care has launched a Web-based Less-Pain Academy during the recent 19th Conference of the European Wound Management Association (EWMA) in Helsinki, Finland. The initiative has been endorsed by the EWMA. The Less-Pain Academy is designed for healthcare practitioners who are actively involved in wound-dressing changes. The new Web site provides access to the latest research, therapies, protocols, and best practices. Membership, free of charge, will provide regular newsletters covering new clinical research and developments.

The Governor of New Jersey, Jon Corzine, has signed into law a new bill that requires nursing homes to use pressure redistribution mattresses for all residents. The law went into effect on June 22, 2009. In regard to the replacement of mattresses with pressure redistribution mattresses, the new legislation states: "Beginning one year after the effective date of this act, when a nursing home replaces a mattress for use by a nursing home resident, the nursing home shall replace the mattress with a pressure redistribution mattress that is designed to address, at a minimum, Stage 1 pressure ulcers."
