Abstract

This article discusses the losses many people face when they decide, or are forced, to end their life of driving and the types of new beginnings they may experience when they begin life after driving. It draws a distinction between the act of making a change and the psychological process of a transition, which involves letting go of the past and making the transition to the new, a process that can be very difficult. In addition to presenting strategies for coping with transitions, this article suggests a public policy agenda for encouraging people to plan for their transportation transition.
