Abstract

Many infants experience uncomplicated gastroesophageal reflux (GER) that spontaneously resolves within the first year of life. However, some infants experience complicated GER (known as GER disease), characterized by the presence of concomitant symptoms or complications, for example, dysphagia, frequent vomiting, esophagitis, abdominal pain, respiratory disorders, or poor weight gain. This condition is further complicated by potential underlying causes, such as anatomic obstructions, food allergies, and/or developmental issues. A case study is presented that explores the manifestation of GER disease in a female infant, with emphasis on the multidisciplinary medical evaluation and the related nutritional, pharmacologic, and behavioral interventions applied during treatment.
