National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel
At the recent meeting of the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) in Arlington, Virginia, the 2009 award winners were honored. They are as follows:
Kosiak Award: Sharon Baranoski, MSN, RN, CWOCN, APN, DAPWCA, FAAN, President, Wound Care Dynamics, Inc.
This award is presented at each NPUAP biennial conference to recognize persons having made significant contributions to the prevention and/or treatment of pressure ulcers through their leadership in the fields of research, education, and/or patient care.
Ms Baranoski has devoted more than 25 years of her professional nursing career working in the area of wound care and pressure ulcers. Among her many accomplishments, she is the founder of the annual Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care and continues to serve as symposium director. Throughout her career, she has presented and consulted on topics related to pressure ulcers at innumerable other conferences regionally, nationally, and internationally. She has also coauthored 2 editions of the book, "Wound Care Essentials: Practice Principles." Ms Baranoski is a past president of the NPUAP and has been active in her efforts to advance the national policy agenda for pressure ulcers.
Thomas Stewart Founder's Award: Joseph A. Rolley, Vice President, Global Government Affairs & Health Policy, ConvaTec, Inc.
This award honors persons who have made significant contributions to the field of pressure ulcer prevention and treatment, particularly relating to public policy. This prestigious award reflects NPUAP's ongoing commitment to positively influence public policy to improve the field of pressure ulcer prevention, treatment, education, and patient care.
Mr Rolley has more than 28 years' experience in the medical device industry, including an intimate involvement in wound care issues across the entire continuum of care. Among his many achievements, Mr Rolley has authored and coauthored dozens of comment letters and public statements on pressure ulcer issues for NPUAP, as well as for other wound care groups and professional societies. In addition, he has been a very active member of the NPUAP Public Policy Committee.
Roberta Abruzzese Award: Richard A. Benoit, Jr, MSN, RN, CCRN
This award is named in honor of Dr Roberta Abruzzese for her vision, leadership, and support in promoting educational endeavors in relation to pressure ulcer management. Sponsored by Gaymar Industries, Inc, the award provides travel funds to a student showing interest and promise in the field of pressure ulcer research, treatment, and prevention or education.
THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF WOUND CARE
The National Alliance of Wound Care (NAWC), a multidisciplinary professional wound care certification and membership organization offering the wound care certified (WCC) credential to nurses of all levels, therapists, physicians, and their assistants, has announced its third Annual Awards and Scholarship Program. The NAWC will bestow WCC Achievement Awards in the following categories:
* Outstanding Research in Wound Care
* Outstanding Work in Diabetic Wounds
* Outstanding WCC of the Year
The NAWC Awards Committee will review the candidates and make their selections based on criteria the committee has established. Winners in each category will receive free tuition to the Wild on Wounds Conference at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, to be held September 10 to 12, 2009; airfare (if applicable); and a maximum of 2 nights' accommodations at the conference hotel. The NAWC is also seeking nominations for its third Annual WCC Scholarship to be awarded to a deserving wound care professional aspiring to further his or her education in wound care by earning the WCC credential and who meets the eligibility requirements as set forth by the NAWC. American Professional Wound Care Association
Review Course. The American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA) is offering "The Essentials-A Comprehensive Review and Refresher Course on Wound Care Management and Intervention" on September 12 to 13, 2009, at the Renaissance Philadelphia Airport Hotel, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is an intensive 2-day review for all practitioners and a valuable tool for certification examination preparation, including the Physician Wound Care Certification Examination. The lectures will feature multiple subjects that serve as a broad-based review on the standard treatments for diabetic, ischemic, venous, and pressure ulcers. This includes management of the wounds and diseases that directly affect healing.

Certification Examination. The first Physician-Specific Wound Care Certification Examination, credentialing all prescribing physicians (MD, DO, and DPM) in the field of wound care, is offered by the Council for Medical Education and Testing (CMET). The certification process is the examination recognized by the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine and endorsed by the American Professional Wound Care Association. The next examination will be offered on October 25, 2009, in conjunction with the Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care in San Antonio, Texas.
