Use of a checklist of surgery protocols reduced the incidence of surgery-related deaths and complications, reported the World Health Organization's Safe Surgery Saves Lives program in the January 29 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The checklist program was initially put into practice in eight hospitals worldwide. Before its use, 11% of noncardiac surgical patients in these hospitals experienced postsurgery complications, including pneumonia, sepsis, heart attack, or stroke. After the checklist was used, only 7% suffered complications. Moreover, the eight facilities saw death rates drop from 1.5% to 0.8%, a nearly 50% decrease.
