Sexually transmitted infections have decreased by 67% per month among Bangladeshi refugees in two camps, reported the United Nations Refugee Agency on January 14. This decrease is due to the increased accessibility of condoms, which community health workers are dispensing from their homes, as well as to increased diagnosis training for clinic staff and the availability of appropriate drugs. Community health workers may be a more approachable source for condoms than the clinic, where some refugees believe they will be chastised for having extramarital sex. The two refugee camps where the decreases were seen have only 39 community health workers to treat 28,000 refugees. For more information, go to http://bit.ly/8UVlI.
