This seminar covers the anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology of various gastrointestinal (GI) structures and disorders. The lecture reviews the GI anatomy including the mouth and oropharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large bowel, and rectum. Associated structures such as the liver, spleen, and pancreas are also addresssed. Specific clinical entities that are discussed include: the tonsils and adenoids, esophageal varices, Barrett's esophagus, gastroesgophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) gastropathy, E. Coli 0157:H7 as a food-borne illness, celiac disease, Crohn disease, appendicitis, ulcerative colitis, colon cancer, and the rectum as a portal of entry for various and sundry sexually transmitted infections. Treatment of the reviewed diseases including medications is also covered.
