National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel
Election. The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) has elected 5 board members for the 2009-2011 term. Becky Dorner, RD, LD; Diane Langemo, PhD, RN, FAAN (president); and Barb Pieper, PhD, BC, APRN, CWOCN, FAAN (treasurer), were re-elected to the board of directors. Mary Ellen Posthauer, RD, CD, LD, who has served previously on the board and also as president, returns to the board. In addition, Margaret Goldberg, RN, MSN, CWOCN, will serve as a new director.
Becky Dorner is founder/president of Becky Dorner Associates, Inc, Akron, Ohio, a dietetic education and information firm, and Nutrition Consulting Services, Inc, a dietetics consulting firm, providing services to more than 100 health care facilities in Ohio since 1983. Diane Langemo, PhD, RN, FAAN (president), is a Chester Fritz distinguished professor emeritus and adjunct professor at the University of North Dakota College of Nursing, Grand Forks, North Dakota, where she has taught in both the graduate and undergraduate programs. Barb Pieper, PhD, APRN-BC, CWOCN, FAAN (treasurer), is a professor at Wayne State University College of Nursing, Detroit, Michigan. Dr Pieper has presented and published numerous articles on the care of chronic wounds and venous ulcers. Mary Ellen Posthauer, RD, CD, LD, is a registered dietitian and a consultant for SupremeCare West, Inc, Evansville, Indiana. She is past president of the NPUAP and is currently the alumni representative to the NPUAP. Margaret Goldberg, RN, MSN, CWOCN, is a clinical nurse specialist in wound, ostomy, and continence and has been in practice for more than 25 years. She is currently a wound care specialist at an outpatient center in Delray Beach, Florida.
Call for Abstracts. The NPUAP invites clinicians to submit an abstract for a poster presentation at the 11th Biennial Conference, February 27-28, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency in Arlington, Virginia. The deadline to submit abstracts is on November 21, 2008. Applicants will be notified of the status of their abstract's acceptance by December 5, 2008.

American Professional Wound Care Association
Open Enrollment Closing. The American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA) is terminating the open pathway for physicians to become fellows of the APWCA as of December 31, 2008. Therefore, effective January 1, 2009, a physician-specific certification in wound care will be required for physicians to become fellows of the APWCA. Physicians will still be able to join as associate members without wound care physician certification and enjoy member benefits. Physicians are able to join until the effective January 1, 2009, date under the current policy before termination of open enrollment. The current policy is that physicians who are board certified in their field of medicine are fellows of the APWCA. There are no changes for credentialing of nurses and other fields of medicine for the association.
Review and Refresher Course. The APWCA is offering a new program, "The Essentials-A Comprehensive Review and Refresher Course on Wound Care Management and Intervention." Designed for all health care providers, the 2-day (15-hour) review course will be held on January 10 and 11, 2009, at the Marriott Renaissance Concourse Hotel at the Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. The multidisciplinary faculty includes Jane Fore, MD, FAPWCA, chairperson; Steven Kravitz, DPM, FAPWCA; David Brotman, MD, FAPWCA; James McGuire, DPM, FAPWCA; Adrianne Smith, MD, FAPWCA; Elizabeth A. Ayello, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, ETN, FAPWCA, FAAN; Kathya Zinszer, DPM, FAPWCA, and more.
APWCA2009. The APWCA2009 National Conference will be held on April 2-5, 2009, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and will add a new dimension as it also hosts The American College of Hyperbaric Medicine's National Meeting. The Scientific Program will be highlighted by international faculty renowned for their research, teaching expertise, and contributions to wound care. More than 30 invited internationally respected faculty include David Allie, MD, FAPWCA; Elizabeth A. Ayello, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, ETN, FAPWCA, FAAN; Sharon Baranoski, MSN, RN, CWOCN, APN, DAPWCA, FAAN; Allen Jacobs, DPM, FAPWCA; Dieter Mayer, MD, FAPWCA; Caroline Fife, MD; Adrianne Smith, MD, FAPWCA; Diane Krasner, RN, PhD, FAPWCA; R. Gary Sibbald, BSc, MD, FRCPC (Med) (Derm), FAPWCA, MEd; Robert Frykberg, DPM, MPH, FAPWCA, and many more.
Applications for the submission of poster and oral abstracts for presentation at APWCA2009 are currently being accepted and are available on the APWCA Web site. Guidelines for presentation have been revised for this year. All abstract applications must be submitted as an e-mail attachment on the posted forms. The deadline is on February 2, 2009, for all oral and poster abstract application submissions.
Physician's Certification Examination. The first Physician-Specific Wound Care Certification Examination, credentialing all prescribing physicians (MDs, DOs, and DPMs) in the field of wound care, will be offered by the Council for Medical Education and Testing (CMET). The CMET certification is the examination recognized by the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine and endorsed by the APWCA.
The next examination will be offered on April 5, 2009, at the APWCA National Clinical Conference, "Wound Care and the Related Sciences" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
