Monitoring laboratory values is a critical evaluation tool when caring for the patient with a wound. Laboratory values are helpful in assessing and monitoring any chronic underlying medical conditions of the patient. These values should be evaluated when the patient is encountered for the first time and strategically thereafter. Laboratory values include protein levels, complete blood count values, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, liver function tests, glucose and iron levels, total lymphocyte count, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine, lipoproteins, vitamin and mineral levels, and urinalysis.
These values will be reviewed in upcoming "Practice Points" columns throughout the coming year. To get started, here is a quick-reference Table.
