Hulebak Elected Chair of Codex Alimentarius Commission
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that Dr Karen Hulebak, a chief scientist for USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, has been elected to serve a 2-year term as chair of the prestigious Codex Alimentarius Commission, the international food standards organization.
Codex was created in 1963 by 2 United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Codex develops food standards, guidelines, and codes of practice to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair food trade practices, and promote coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and nongovernmental organizations.
Dr Hulebak received her doctorate in toxicology from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in 1983 and was a postdoctoral research fellow in pharmacology at the University of North Carolina Biomedical Research Center. She received her bachelor's degree from Washington University in St Louis.

Earl Named Vice President of Nutrition at Grocery Manufacturers of America
Robert Earl, MPH, RD, has been named as vice president of Nutrition for the Grocery Manufacturers of America (GMA). His experience in nutrition policy will help GMA and its member companies develop and execute strategies and programs (national and international) to deliver on the health and wellness strategic focus area commitments.
Before joining GMA, Bob was vice president of public health at the International Food Information Council (IFIC), Washington, District of Columbia, directing food communications and education programs on food safety, food allergens, and nutrition topics. Before joining IFIC, he was a study director at the Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, where he codirected studies on nutrition and food labeling and directed other nutrition and food policy studies. Earlier, he was administrator of government affairs at the Washington office of the American Dietetic Association.

Congratulations to chair-elect Katherine Tucker, Tufts University, and at-large members of the Executive Committee for Molecular Nutrition-Marta Fiorroto, Baylor University Nutrition Epidemiology, Public Health and Behavioral Nutrition, and Shirley Gerrior, US Department of Agriculture!
Lupton Named Distinguished Professor
Joanne R. Lupton, PhD, has been named distinguished professor at Texas A&M. This designation denotes a faculty member who is recognized as being in the top 5% of their field by peers throughout the world. Dr Lupton is William W. Allen Endowed Chair in Human Nutrition and has served as past president of the American Society of Nutrition. She has been on the Nutrition Study Section at the National Institutes of Health and is associate editor of the Journal of Nutrition and Nutrition and Cancer. She has won several teaching awards, including the US Department of Agriculture (southern region) award, and was the recipient of the Vice Chancellor's Award for Research at Texas A&M. Dr Lupton is also the associate program leader for nutrition and exercise physiology for the National Space Biomedical Research Institute. Her expertise is the effect of dietary fibers on colonic lumenal contents, colonic cell proliferation, signal transduction, and colon carcinogenesis.

In Memoriam
Julius B. Richmond, MD
The Nutrition Today community mourns the loss of Julius B. Richmond, a former US surgeon general and professor emeritus of health policy. He was 91 years old. Julie issued the momentous 1979 report "Smoking and Health," set targets for the health of the American public with the Healthy People report, and was the first national director of the Head Start Program.
Julie was trained in pediatrics and child development and worked to introduce psychosocial development into pediatric education, research, and services.
From 1977 to 1981, Julie served as US surgeon general and assistant secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. As surgeon general, he reinvigorated tobacco control efforts through the release of the 1979 surgeon general's report entitled "Smoking and Health." That same year, Julie issued the landmark report entitled "Healthy People: The Surgeon-General's Report on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention." This report established quantitative health goals for the nation for the next decade. A committed advocate, he also chaired the steering committee of the Forum on the Future of Families and Children of the National Academy of Sciences from 1987 to 1993.
Julie was professor of health policy and professor of preventive and social medicine at Harvard School of Public Health, director of the Judge Baker Children's Center from 1971 to 1977, and director of the Division of Health Policy Research and Education at Harvard University. He also served as professor of child psychiatry and human development at Harvard Medical School and chairman of psychiatry at the Children's Hospital.
Julie received numerous awards, including the C. Anderson Aldrich Award of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Gustav O. Lienhard Award, and the Walsh McDermott Medal of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. We would like to express our condolences to Julie's wife, Jean Berger Richmond, and to the entire Richmond family.
