As a longtime reader (more than 20 years), I'd never felt the need to write until I saw the cover of the June issue. While I understand that nurses need to support the health of a community and that many people eat meat, I don't understand why AJN would feature nursing students treating animals with such disregard. Compassion should extend to all lives, not just those of humans.

Chickens are intelligent and, depending on the way they're raised, affectionate. I'm ashamed of Emory University and AJN for thinking this is something most nurses would be proud of.
