The increasing numbers of family caregivers and their associated burdens and costs are a national public health concern. Nurses work closely with families to help them understand health issues and provide needed care to family members. To help nurses and other health care professionals plan and move effective caregiver-related programs and policies into communities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has produced the guide Assuring Healthy Caregivers, A Public Health Approach to Translating Research into Practice: The RE-AIM Framework. The RE-AIM framework is a model for planning and implementing intervention programs; it's named for the five phases involved in implementing caregiver interventions and policy changes: Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance. The monograph lists important questions to ask, outlines methods, and offers resources and case examples. It's available at http://www.cdc.gov/aging/caregiving/index.htm.
