Abstract

Only 30 years ago, most persons with a developmental disability were in the shadows of society. Today, we see a major shift from institutionalization to integration within the community. Better care from birth through adulthood has resulted in a better quality of life and greater longevity. The variety of conditions and functional impairments places them at greater risk for chronic disease. The care needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and that of their caregivers change with age. This commentary presents issues pertinent to individuals with developmental disabilities and considerations for their care as they get older.
