Abstract
Nutrition assessment and management of a patient with head injury are complicated because of the unique metabolic consequences that develop postinjury. Hypermetabolism and hypercatabolism coupled with immune function alterations and gastrointestinal motility disturbances can impede adequate and timely administration of nutrition support. In this population, few evidence-based guidelines exist to direct nutritional care and evaluation of nutrition outcomes. A case study of a patient with head injury is reviewed with emphasis on available evidence-based nutrition support recommendations.
