Retaining new nurses is critical. We are faced with a growing shortage of nurses and should be supporting new ones, not knocking them down. I have been a nurse for a year and a half and I am shocked by the amount of verbal abuse and lack of support I get from other nurses. With mounting evidence that higher patient-nurse ratios can adversely affect patient outcomes, increase costs, and place patients at risk, we need to try to retain as many new nurses as possible.
