Abstract
Several themes related to patient safety and the nursing workforce have been discussed by conference presenters. These themes include the surveillance role of nursing, the growing impact of healthcare services on patients and families, and the ongoing challenges related to nursing education. The interdisciplinary nature of healthcare and the implications that this has for collaboration in education and practice are examined also. All these themes have critical implications for research and leadership development. Until these pressing themes are addressed, the issues raised in the presentations today will remain unresolved.
