Derma Sciences, Princeton, NJ, a manufacturer and marketer of advanced wound care products, has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market and sell its API-MED Active Manuka Honey Absorbent Dressing. This represents the first FDA clearance of a honey-based product for the management of wounds and burns, according to the company. Honey-based products have been available throughout Europe where they compete against silver-based dressings. Noted for their lack of toxicity, as well as their ability to be used in all phases of wound healing, their role as a key component in wound bed preparation regimens, and their ease of use, honey-based dressings have in only 2 years captured a significant portion of that market, the manufacturer said.

To prepare for the launch and expected demand for API-MED, Derma Sciences has begun to build up its sales force and clinical infrastructure.

Although new studies indicate a rise in the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), antimicrobial skin cleansers containing the active ingredient chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) are an instrumental factor in prevention. A key to prevention of an MRSA infection is keeping hands clean to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. However, many of the products used by consumers do not contain pharmaceutical-quality, antimicrobial agents with residual activity, according to Jack Doornbos, director of channel marketing, Mo[spacing diaeresis]lnlycke Health Care US, Norcross, GA. Residual activity works when the antimicrobial bonds with the skin to prevent recolonization. Use of products containing CHG, such as Mo[spacing diaeresis]lnlycke's Hibiclens antiseptic skin cleanser, may help reduce the incidence of MRSA infections, according to the company.
