Derma Sciences, Princeton, NJ, a manufacturer and marketer of advanced wound care products, has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market and sell its API-MED Active Manuka Honey Absorbent Dressing. This represents the first FDA clearance of a honey-based product for the management of wounds and burns, according to the company. Honey-based products have been available throughout Europe where they compete against silver-based dressings. Noted for their lack of toxicity, as well as their ability to be used in all phases of wound healing, their role as a key component in wound bed preparation regimens, and their ease of use, honey-based dressings have in only 2 years captured a significant portion of that market, the manufacturer said.
To prepare for the launch and expected demand for API-MED, Derma Sciences has begun to build up its sales force and clinical infrastructure.

Smith & Nephew's Advanced Wound Management Division plans to move the operations of its negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) business from California to its US headquarters in Largo, FL. The planned move is part of the company's integration of BlueSky Medical Group, Inc, which was acquired in May. BlueSky's products are among Smith & Nephew's range of customer solutions for hard-to-heal wounds and are the cornerstone for the company's development of a global NPWT business.
