The prescription for living is an excellent resource for ensuring that cancer patients and survivors get good care ("The Cancer Survivor's Prescription for Living," April). Patients need support from the moment they are diagnosed. As a father whose five-year-old son was diagnosed with medulloblastoma in June 2000, I know the words "you have cancer" are terrifying. (My son was lucky to have survived, although he lost his vision.)

There are two free resources nurses can offer patients. One is the Livestrong Survivorship Notebook from the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a manual that addresses symptom management, treatment options, medications, questions for physicians, and inspirational stories from cancer survivors. The second is the Cancer Survival Toolbox from the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. These resources can be obtained at http://www.store-laf.org/nt001.html and http://www.cancersurvivaltoolbox.org, respectively.
