A transdermal patch that dispenses oxybutynin to treat overactive bladder is well tolerated and improves quality of life, a new report says. Oxybutynin helps relax bladder muscles and ease such symptoms as frequent urination, nighttime urination, and incontinence.

Researchers evaluated changes in health-related quality of life in 2,592 adults with overactive bladder who were being treated with the oxybutynin transdermal system (OXY-TDS), marketed as Oxytrol. At baseline, about 75% of the people had common symptoms of overactive bladder that affected their lives moderately or severely.

After treatment with OXY-TDS (3.9 mg/day) for about 6 months, more than 40% of participants reported a decrease in urgency, frequency, urine leakage, and having to urinate at night. Answering a questionnaire, they also reported improvements in all areas of health-related quality of life.
