On the day we said goodbye, the light that usually shone
From deep within once sparkling eyes was dim and almost gone.
When I quietly turned to leave the room,
You said you were afraid.
Though your voice was soft, your need was great
So I held your hand and stayed.
You taught a precious lesson as I stayed to hold your hand
And, after some reflection, I've come to understand.
We must learn to live and live to love
And any fame or wealth
Cannot compare to the precious joy
That comes when you share yourself.
How can I ever thank you for the change that has been wrought
In my life and nursing practice from the lesson that you taught?
I will live each day more fully,
At least I know I'll try
Cause I'm thankful for the time we shared
On the day we said goodbye.
