Providing safe and effective care for patients undergoing procedures with intravenous medications for their physical and psychological comfort is a challenging part of our practice. Changing terminology reflects changes in practice driven by the increasing number of such cases done each year and the evolving responsibilities of nursing roles in these procedures. New definitions and standards are being promulgated. And new controversies are arising!! Is your practice ready to evolve? This discussion will focus on selected topics such as strategies for patient selection, assessment and preparation; rational titration of medication; planning for safety; making sense of monitoring; rapid response to adverse events; effective documentation; and risk management strategies.
