Diana Mason's editorial ("Scholarly?," December 2006) reminded me of Scholarship Reconsidered, a study by Ernest Boyer, published by the Carnegie Foundation, in which Boyer contended that our understanding of scholarship needs to go beyond the teaching-versus-research debate. I think scholarship is about how one does something (thoughtfully, creatively) rather than what one does (research, practice). When we all see ourselves as scholarly, nursing will be held in even higher esteem.

I understand Diana Mason's weariness about misconceptions concerning AJN. I applaud the changes the journal has made in the last eight years, and I think it has done a great job in including "something for everyone" within the broad community of nursing. I elected to renew my subscription after the ANA dropped AJN as its official publication. Keep up the good work!!
