ABSTRACT
Guidelines exist for the use of postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) for occupational and nonoccupational exposures to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and occupational exposures of hepatitis C and hepatitis B infections. The type of prophylaxis utilized depends on the type of exposure and the risk of transmission. Guidelines are also available for PEP regimens for HIV. Potential adverse effects and possible drug interactions are important considerations before determining the most appropriate therapy. PEP needs to be considered for all high-risk exposures and should be initiated as soon as possible. Adherence to the treatment course is vital for a positive outcome.
