Administration of atorvastatin to patients who have recently suffered ischemic stroke lessens the risk of another stroke, according to a recent study. Researchers conducted a trial of 4,731 patients, each given either 80 mg of atorvastatin per day or placebo. While atorvastatin users saw fewer ischemic strokes, they were at higher risk for hemorrhagic strokes. However, overall mortality rates and incidences of fatal strokes were not affected. These findings support the use of statin therapy for ischemic stroke patients.
