Editorial Advisory Board Member Receives Million Dollar Grant
Dannon Institute Growing Leaps & Bounds program has selected Johns Hopkins University as the efficacy study site. Johns Hopkins will receive a total of $1.2 million from the Dannon Institute to complete this study over the next 3 years. The Johns Hopkins review team will be led by Benjamin Caballaro, a member of our editorial advisory board. Congratulations, Ben!
Nutrition Genomics Expert Receives US Department of Agriculture Award
Discoveries about how genetic inheritance provokes biochemical responses to diet and nutrition have garnered a Secretary's Honor Award for Jose M. Ordovas of the Jean Mayer US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. Ordovas is director of the HNRCA's Nutrition and Genomics Laboratory, which is funded by the Agricultural Research Service, the USDA's chief scientific research agency.
Ordovas was among those honored at the 59th Secretary's Honor Awards Ceremony. Secretary's Honor Award recipient Ordovas began his career, more than 2 decades ago, researching genes that control blood levels of fats, which affect the risk of heart disease. He is currently leading investigations into how nutrients regulate the actions of genes that are involved in metabolism and genes that are related to obesity. Congratulations Jose!
American Association for Cancer Research Chief Executive Officer Foti Receives Cancer Service Award
American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Chief Executive Officer Margaret Foti, PhD, MD, received the Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI) Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding contributions to progress in cancer research. The award was presented during a special ceremony at AACI's annual meeting.
Foti has dedicated her career to cancer research and the AACR. Progressing through several key editorial and management roles at the AACR, she was appointed to her current position of chief executive officer in 1982 by the AACR's Board of Directors. In addition, she serves as secretary-treasurer and chief executive officer of the AACR Foundation for the Prevention and Cure of Cancer and managing editor of Cancer Research. During Foti's tenure, AACR membership has grown to more than 24,000 scientists residing in more than 70 countries.
John Courtney Selected as American Society for Nutrition's Executive Officer
John E. Courtney, PhD, has been named as the new executive officer for the American Society for Nutrition (ASN). Dr Courtney brings to ASN more than 20 years of management experience in medical and scientific societies. He is currently serving as president and chief executive officer of the Clinical Research Forum. The Forum is the leading advocate for clinical research in the United States. Dr Courtney earned his doctorate in educational administration from American University, his master's in business administration from Hood College, and his bachelor's degree in business administration and management from the University of Maryland. With more than 3,500 members, the ASN is dedicated to improving the quality of life through the science of nutrition.
In Memoriam
Joan Sharp
Nutrition Today mourns the loss of Joan Sharp, 1977-1978 American Dietetic Association (ADA) president. Joan died on Friday, September 22, 2006, after a lengthy illness. Joan was the retired director of Nutrition and Dietetics at The Ohio State University Medical Center, and assistant professor, Division of Medical Dietetics, School of Allied Medical Professions, The Ohio State University. In addition to having been an ADA president, Joan served as ADA treasurer and speaker of the House of Delegates. For those who knew Joan, they will remember her admiration of the profession and her commitment to teamwork.
Constance Jordan
Nutrition Today mourns the loss of Constance Jordan, former professor at the Framingham State College, where she was the head of home economics and was the graduate dean. Dr Jordan graduated from Framingham State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education; she earned her Master's of Public Health from Harvard University, and her PhD, from Cornell University. She was a former trustee of Framingham State College and the Natick Visiting Nurses Association. She was also nominated as senior woman of the year in Natick in 1997. Memorial donations in Constance's memory may be made to the Constance Jordan Scholarship Fund, Framingham State College.
Institute of Medicine Names 2006-2007 Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellows
The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies has named 7 new Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows for 2006-2007.
The fellows will spend a year in Washington, DC, working in a congressional office or the executive branch. During that time, they will enrich their understanding of public policy practices and the ways that government health research relates to the mission of their home institutions and local communities. Afterward, the fellows will return to their communities to apply their experiences to improving health policy and management locally. The fellows also receive additional funds for up to 2 years so that they may continue their development as health policy leaders.
The 2006-2007 fellows are the following:

* Barbara L. Kornblau, JD, OTR/L: professor of occupational therapy and public health, Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale-Davie, Fla
