Possible new staffing requirements put pressure on nursing facilities. The Biden administration last year announced plans to improve the quality of care for residents of nursing facilities. The proposed new rule, which has yet to be issued, is expected to raise the minimum number of nurse hours per resident day. According to an analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation, while most facilities would meet a requirement of three hours per resident day, "just over half (55%) of nursing facilities would meet a requirement for 3.5 hours and only 29% could comply with 4 hours without hiring new staff." The analysis suggests that if the federal government requires four hours, many nursing facilities will need to hire additional staff-an increased workforce demand at a time when U.S. health care facilities are struggling with staff shortages.
