Sense the control
New to the market is the DexCom STS Continuous Glucose Monitoring System for use in adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The device uses a small sensor that's inserted under the skin once a day to read the blood glucose level from minute to minute. Data collected by the sensor are then transmitted to a handheld receiver, which allows the wearer to view his current blood glucose level, along with 1-hour, 3-hour, and 9-hour trends. The receiver will also sound an alert if a high or low blood glucose level is detected. This product is expected to greatly improve glycemic control.

Patch up major depression. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the selegiline (Emsam) transdermal patch, the first transdermal patch for use in treating major depression. The once-daily patch delivers selegiline, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), in a 6-mg, 9-mg, or 12-mg dose over a 24-hour period. Patients don't have to follow the normal dietary restrictions for MAOIs if they're taking the lowest (6-mg) dose. The only common adverse effect found during clinical trials was mild skin irritation at the patch site. As with other MAOIs, children and adolescents should be monitored closely for an increased risk of suicidal tendencies when using the patch. The Emsam transdermal patch is being manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb for Somerset Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
