In January 2023, the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) provided much needed guidance on this topic. In only a few months, the proliferation of chatbots and their expanded use have called for another update. This new statement was revised on May 31, 2023. WAME Recommendations on Chatbots and Generative Artificial Intelligence in Relation to Scholarly Publications, revised May 31, 2023, appears on the WAME website.1
As we all learn more about this rapidly evolving field, we will work with other scholarly organizations to share information and provide avenues for discussion and new learning. Please visit https://wame.org/page3.php?id=106&ct=t(DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST) to keep up with this topic. The complete update has also been published in professional journals and is being shared with authors, publishers, and academic partners.2,3
Specific updates include the following:
A new recommendation (#4) has been added to the 4 original principal recommendations:
Only humans can be authors.
Authors should acknowledge the sources of their materials.
Authors must take public responsibility for their work.
Editors and reviewers should specify, to authors and each other, any use of chatbots in evaluation of the manuscript and generation of reviews and correspondence.
Editors need appropriate digital tools to deal with the effects of chatbots on publishing.
In addition, this revision acknowledges that chatbots are used to perform different functions in scholarly publications. Currently, individuals in scholarly publishing may use chatbots for
simple word-processing tasks (analogous to, and an extension of, word-processing and grammar-checking software),
the generation of ideas and text, and
substantive research.
The recommendations have been tailored for application to these different uses.
At the Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing, we invite discussion and submissions on this topic as it continues to evolve!
