Data from a 2004 survey conducted as part of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) annual Medical Expenditure Panel Survey reveal that many people don't consider life-threatening illness a strong enough reason to quit smoking. Forty percent of adults with emphysema and 23.4% of people with asthma or history of stroke continue smoking despite its risks, along with 17% of those with diabetes.
