FDA sets mammogram standards to better inform women with dense breasts. New federal mammogram standards issued by the Food and Drug Administration require mammogram facilities to provide women and their health care providers with an assessment of breast density. Women with dense breast tissue will be informed that it is more difficult to detect tumors in dense breast tissue on a mammogram and that they are at higher risk for breast cancer. They will be advised to follow up with their health care providers about the need for further testing. The wording in the notice going out to women will also change to improve clarity, replacing "high density" and "low density" with "dense" and "not dense." The goal of the changes is to save lives through earlier detection of breast cancer, which the American Cancer Society estimates will kill over 43,000 women this year.
