The authors of "Keeping Yourself Safe" (Health and Safety, May) provide important questions nurses should ask prospective employers about policies to promote safety in their institutions. Nurses can be their own advocates. Despite the satisfaction derived from helping others, such rewards are not enough to keep most people in a career for a lifetime. Nurses need employers who value and provide for their safety. Just as we must be accountable to our employers and patients, so should our employers ensure a safe work environment for us.
