Nutrition Today is pleased to announce 2 more new members of the editorial advisory board, Dr Michael McBurney and Janet Tenney. Each brings wonderful insights from their respective fields to the articles published in Nutrition Today.
Michael McBurney, PhD, is the head of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at Texas A&M University. Dr McBurney was a senior nutrition business partner at the Kellogg company and an adjunct professor at the University of Alberta and Michigan State University. At Kellogg, he was responsible for the nutrition labeling of US products and nutrition research. He also taught nutrition in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Nutritional Science at the University of Alberta at Edmonton from 1988 until 1997.
Janet Tenney is currently Nutritionist for the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). In this capacity she works with the various AMS programs on nutrition issues and health claims with the commodity boards, with the Food and Nutrition Service and with the Commodity Procurement Branches in AMS. Previously Ms Tenney was Manager of Nutrition Programs for Giant Food, a regional food/pharmacy chain in the Baltimore-Washington area for 30 years. She holds a Masters in Human Nutrition from the Institute of Human Nutrition, Columbia University and a BA from Harvard University.

Judith A. Gilbride Named 2006-2007 President of the American Dietetic Association
Registered dietitian Judith A. Gilbride, professor and chair of the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, began her 1-year term in June 1 as the 2006-2007 president of the American Dietetic Association, the nation's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. During her term as American Dietetic Association president, Ms Gilbride plans to expand the educational and professional development opportunities for registered dietitians, particularly in areas such as genetics and its applications in nutrition research and practice.
Nestle Nutrition Institute Names 2006 Nutrition Ambassadors
Jessie Pavlinac, MS, RD, CSR, LD, Clinical Nutrition Manager, Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Ore, and Young Hee Kim, MS, RD, LDN, CNSD, Clinical Nutrition Manager, Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, Mass, have been named 2006 Nutrition Ambassadors by Nestle Nutrition Institute. The Nutrition Ambassador Program recognizes professionals in the field of nutritional science who clearly demonstrate an exceptional commitment to clinical nutrition and its practical application. Applicants were required to articulately explain how they would improve the role of the dietitian in the nutrition support practice.
American Dietetic Association Foundation Names New Directors for 2006 to 2007
The American Dietetic Association (ADA) Foundation has named 4 new members of its Board of Directors for 2006-2007. The entire 13-member board is responsible for strategic planning, policy development, and fiscal management for the Chicago-based ADA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the ADA.
The foundation's new 2006-2007 directors are as follows:
* Arthur S. Agatston, MD, Miami Beach, Fla, associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami and author of The South Beach Diet book series.
* Connie B. Diekman, MEd, RD, LD, FADA, St Louis, Mo, director of university nutrition at Washington University in St Louis and the ADA's 2006-2007 president-elect.
* Susan Calvert Finn, PhD, RD, FADA, Columbus, Ohio, chair of the American Council for Fitness and Nutrition, retired director of Nutrition and Communications at the Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories, and the 1992-1993 president of the ADA.
* Sachiko T. St. Jeor, PhD, MS, RD, Reno, Nev, professor and chief of the Division of Medical Nutrition and director of the Center for Nutrition and Metabolic Disorders at the University of Nevada.
Current ADA Foundation board member Neva Hudiburgh Cochran, MS, RD, LD, Dallas, Tex, will serve as ADA Foundation's chair for 2006-2007. Mr Cochran is a nutrition consultant, a writer, a researcher, and a consultant.

IFT Announces 2006 Award Winners
Congratulations are in order for the 2006 Achievement Award winners. Recipients were recognized at the Institute of Food Technologies (IFT) Annual Meeting in Orlando. This year's roster includes the following:
* George E. Inglett, US Department of Agriculture, received the Nicholas Appert Award, which is given to an IFT member or nonmember for preeminence in and contributions to the field of food technology.
* Mary Ellen Camire, University of Maine, won the Babcock-Hart for her contributions to food technology, which have resulted in improved public health through nutrition or more nutritious food.
* Daniel Y.C. Fung, Kansas State University, won the William V. Cruess Award in recognition of his excellence in teaching food science and technology.
* Jairus R. David, Mead Johnson Nutritionals, received the Industrial Scientist Award, which honors an IFT-member industrial scientist or a team of industrial scientist(s) who has made a major technical contribution to the advancement of the food industry.
* Miguel A. Jimenez, M.A. Jimenez Associate, won the Bor S. Luh International Award, which recognizes an institution whose outstanding efforts resulted in one or more of the following: (1) international exchange of ideas in the field of food technology, (2) better international understanding in the field of food technology, and/or (3) practical successful transfer of food technology to an economically depressed area in a developing or developed nation.
* George A. Burdock, Burdock Group, Inc, received the Bernard L. Oser Food Ingredients Safety Award for his contribution to the scientific knowledge of food ingredient safety or leadership in establishing principles for food ingredient safety evaluation or regulation.
* Richard H. Linton, Purdue University, received the Myron Solberg Award, which honors an IFT member for providing leadership in the establishment and successful development and continuation of industry/government/academia cooperative organization.
In Memoriam
Lee Jong-Wook, MD, of World Health Organization
Dr Lee Jong-Wook, a South Korean veteran of the organization and who took over the World Health Organization as the battle against severe acute respiratory syndrome was drawing to a close and then led the fight against bird flu, died after undergoing emergency surgery for a blood clot in his brain, officials said. He was 61. Anders Nordstrom of Sweden, whom Lee had named to take over in an emergency, will serve as acting director-general.
Food and Drug Administration Releases Book to Coincide With the Anniversary of the Pure Food and Drugs Act
FDA: Century of Consumer Protection, edited by Wayne L. Pines, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the enactment of the 1906 Pure Food and Drugs Act. This spirited and unprecedented book is the only book commemorating the centennial of the law that brought foods and drugs under federal regulatory jurisdiction. It includes a preface by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Acting Commissioner, 11 major chapters covering all aspects of FDA during the last century, personal reminiscences by current and former FDAers, and photographs depicting the FDA story. The 43 contributing authors, selected by a committee of former FDA commissioners, deputy commissioners, and general counsels, write captivating accounts based on their personal experiences and knowledge.
