MCGUIRE ELECTED TO NASEM
Congratulations to Dr Michelle McGuire who was just elected to the National Academy of Medicine. She is director and professor, Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences, University of Idaho, Moscow. She was honored for being an internationally renowned expert on maternal, dietary, and environmental factors influencing human milk composition. Her research on the milk microbiome changed the paradigm of human milk sterility, with direct implications to maternal and infant health and well-being. She has been a leader in the global effort to provide evidence-based breastfeeding recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
IAFNS LAUNCHES NEW SODIUM REDUCTION SCIENCE AND STRATEGIES DATABASE
With growing concerns about sodium intake in North America amid the limited impact of public health campaigns, strategies for reducing sodium in the food supply are increasingly important. Sodium has been flagged for decades as a nutrient of public health concern for overconsumption. But the functional roles of sodium in baking, preserving, thickening, curing, and retaining moisture all complicate reduction strategies. A new searchable Institute for the Advancement of Food and Nutrition Sciences (IAFNS) database of more than 280 scientific papers looks at flavor, functional, and physical modifications to lower sodium intakes. It even includes information on combining methods. The database stems from a scientific compendium of articles on sodium reduction techniques and methods. The database has the potential to assist the food sector by decreasing risks posed by sodium overconsumption and offering information on replacements and removal. IAFNS new searchable database compiles evidence-based strategies for sodium reduction organized by specific categories relevant to the food sector. IAFNS's intent with sharing this online and interactive format is to highlight the science that is available and the tools that are effective in maintaining acceptable sensory qualities for various food industry applications.
The database is available here: https://iafns.org/sodium-database/.

Assessing Intake of Food and Dietary Supplements in Older Adults
Proceedings of a Workshop Series National Academies of Science (2022)
Dietary assessment in older adults presents many unique problems due to the diversity of health states and capabilities that span the population group. Little is known about dietary intakes, body composition, and nutritional status among individuals 75 years and older. The National Academies Food and Nutrition Board hosted a virtual workshop series in spring 2022 intended to provide guidance to researchers and clinicians. The workshops aimed to outline considerations relating to different methods of assessing intakes of food and dietary supplements in older adults. The covered topics included current status of dietary and nutrition assessment of older adults and advances and key issues in this topic; nutritional screening of older adults; and nutritional practices, challenges, and policies that affect older adults. This Proceedings highlights presentations and discussions from the workshops; for more information, go to https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/26771/assessing-intake-of-food-and-die.
